As Dexter moves into his last couple of series and The Following cuts its gory path across TV screens, another serial killer is having a show devoted to him as Hannibal gets ready to launch. Starring Mads Mikkelsen, who played the baddie in Casino Royale with the bloody tears in his eye, this is of course based on Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter, the chilling killer in the author's groundbreaking thrillers Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs. British actor Hugh Dancy will play FBI agent Will Graham and Laurence Fishburne the head of behavioural sciences. Further star wattage will be provided by Gillian Anderson as Lecter's therapist and Eddie Izzard as a prison inmate. The series will take proceedings back to when Lecter was a practising psychiatrist whose help was enlisted by Graham to track a particularly twisted murderer. Gripping as Harris's novels are, they did give rise to a TV-movie obsession with genius serial killers who only exist in fiction, with most recently The Following borrowing heavily from Red Dragon's premise (FBI agent who once caught ingenius serial nutter and nearly died in the attempt is called back into action to help recapture him). Will this story of Graham unknowingly collaborating with Lecter intrigue and grip audiences across 13 episodes, or will it just be a lurid gore fest? The series hits Sky Living in the UK in April, soon after its 4 April debut on NBC in the US.
